Jospeh Mphela - 222 Auctions
Starting a new business in the auctioneering industry is not easy, requiring long hours of work with little reward and a dogged determination to succeed.
This is the phase that 222 Auctions finds itself in as it balances marketing activities with onerous requirements to qualify for tenders and the day-to-day grind of setting up a new business. Simultaneously, the task of preserving investments and managing cashflows weighs heavy on the shoulders of the founder, Joseph Phokoane Mphela, who remains unflinching and determined to make his dream business a massive success
Through the grind of setting up the new business, Joseph is keeping his eyes on the prize. He’s putting in the long hours of work and maintaining the type of sharp focus that is required to set the business up for future success. This emphasis on future success also led him to bring in a new partner to share the load and double the marketing effort of the business.
“I’m implementing a plan that I have been harbouring for 22 years since I joined the auctioneering industry. With the encouragement of one of my main mentors, Glen Harris from Headley Harris Auctioneers, I have taken the leap and set up the business to undertake auctions with a specialisation in vehicles, livestock, scrap metal and general asset disposal.
“Glen has also made himself available to assist during auctions and is a great help when it comes to planning and finding a direction. All we need now is a big break to take on a few large auctions to establish ourselves and place us firmly on the map. We are actively seeking business in our home province of Limpopo and also engaging would be clients in Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
“At this point every day is a challenge and potential clients are hard to find. Those that are in the market want references and as a new business this is something we obviously can not supply. So, we are finding other ways to overcome these types of obstacles and in the meantime working on many different tenders in the hopes of getting one - that will be our breakthrough,” says Joseph.
He adds that if his plans come together and the business becomes successful that 222 Auctions will share its success and help with service delivery to the community. “We want to be a serious competitor in the market and earn the respect of our peers and association partners.”
