Brandon Leer - Brandon Leer Auctioneers
Fetching R168 million for a prized buffalo bull, with proceeds going towards conservation, is no easy feat- but for world renowned Auctioneer Brandon Leer, of Brandon Leer Auctioneers, it’s all in a day’s work – or two.
In 2000, after 12 years Industry experience, Brandon opened his own Auction company – Brandon Leer Auctioneers, focusing on livestock and game. His Auctioneering journey began in 1988 when he worked as a trainee Auctioneer for Stock Owners in Vryheid. Before that, he completed his Agricultural Diploma at Cedara College in 1987.
Since starting in 2000, Brandon says the business has been very successful. “My love for livestock gave me the inspiration to take a step away from my localised company so that I could travel throughout South Africa and surrounding countries,” Brandon said when asked about his inspiration for opening Brandon Leer Auctioneers. He credits Dallas Kemp and Clive Gardner as his mentors.
While challenges such as Foot and Mouth and other diseases restricting animal movement, Covid-19 closures and restrictions as well as droughts have had an effect on the business, Brandon says his favourite part involves the animals and the buyers. “I enjoy looking at the animals prior to an auction and also the interaction with buyers from the rostrum.”
With no current plans to expand the business, Brandon Leer Auctioneers operates on a national scale. Their biggest accomplishment thus far? Auctioning off a top breeding buffalo bull at Thaba Tholo Game Reserve’s annual auction in 2016. The ‘super-buffalo’ named Inala was described as a “bull of abundance” with a horn span of 1.30 meters.
