Martin Dibowitz- WH Auctioneers

Martin Dibowitz of WH Auctioneers serves as an inspiration to those navigating unconventional paths in pursuit of their true calling.

His route to establish the company as preeminent force in the auctioneering world is an interesting one and a departure from the conventional. As it happened, he started his career as a qualified chartered accountant, found himself at a crossroads after completing his articles.

Dissatisfied with the routine of auditing and tax work, he was presented with a unique opportunity to join the auction business in 1997. The allure of auctions proved irresistible, prompting him to make the leap into an industry that promised excitement and variety.

In 1998, Dibowitz took the plunge into entrepreneurship, co-founding an auction business in Cape Town with partners. The initial experience ignited a passion for the industry, solidifying his commitment to auctioneering. Since then, Martin has remained an integral part of the auction landscape in South Africa, lending experience and expertise through the highs and lows of the local market.

“For me the role of an auctioneer is multifaceted and rewarding. Engaging in discussions with people, interacting daily with buyers and sellers and the continuous learning curve are among the aspects I love the most. The diverse range of items encountered daily keeps the profession exciting and requires adaptability and a deep understanding of various markets,” he says.

Reflecting on his journey, Martin acknowledges the influence of mentors, particularly industry doyen, Eddie Winterstein, whose guidance played a crucial role in shaping his approach to the business and dealing with challenges. Like any industry, auctioneering presents its share of hardships and Martin says issues like achieving the desired auction prices, collecting payments from buyers and recovering assets are some of the less pleasant parts of the job. Despite these hurdles, he emphasizes that, overall, the auction business is fulfilling and resilient.
